LEARN TO KITESURF WITH JB IN SHOREHAM, WEST SUSSEX
Our Kitesurfing lessons are taught from Shoreham beach in Sussex near to Brighton and Worthing and follow the BKSA / IKO structure that everyone can follow. Learning to kite surf is easier and safer than you might think when taught by a professional kitesurfing instructor, you don’t need to be strong to kite surf but you do need to be comfortable in the water and able to swim a reasonable distance in the sea.
JB Kitesurfing runs a full program of lessons and courses to teach you all the skills you will need to reach your goal of standing up on a kite board and kitesurfing a short distance out and back to the beach. Our kitesurfing lessons are split into three independent modules to allow those that may have previous skills can join us at any stage or why not join our 2 or 3 day course?
- Kitesurfing Lesson 1 - Core kite skills
- Kitesurfing Lesson 2 – Water skills
- Kitesurfing Lesson 3 – Board skills
Each kitesurfing lesson last for 4 – 5 hours and follows a progressive pattern of skills based on the IKO structure and is taught by one of our professional IKO / BKSA instructors. With consistent wind and a bit more coaching (intermediate lessons) you could be kitesurfing out and back to the same spot on the beach, maybe even attempting first jumps!
The mother of all questions, so what level am I?
Below is a guide to realistic kitesurfing skill levels so you can keep track on your next move and also determine what kitesurfing lesson you should join to carry on learning to kite surf the right way with us here at JB Kitesurfing.
Basic skills – As a beginner you may well have flown power kites for a while and can demonstrate the following technical knowledge and practical skills as below?
• Can risk assess your flying zone
• Explain what wind effect is
• Know the use of safety systems
• Set up a foil kite
• Launch and land a foil kite with an assistant
• Fly the kite in control using the wind window
• Twist and untwist the lines while flying the kite
• Walk and change directions while flying the kite
You can fly 4 line kites
Great news as with the basic foil skills you can join our Day 2 – 4 line skills where we teach you how to fly supported leading edge ( SLE) kites that we use for kitesurfing.
Our Lesson 2 – 4 line skills teaches you a huge amount both technical and practical as follows;
• Control the kite hooked into the harness • Understand the de-power system and can use the safety systems • Advanced flying skills with the de-power kite • Show full control of de-power systems in flight • Pull quick release and activate leash • Recover the bar and kite •Enter and exit the water independently and safely while controlling the kite •Water re-launch the kite •First body drag downwind •Maintain correct kite position in the wind window •Change direction to the left and right while body dragging •Recover the kite and bar in the water
There are a couple of skills options that occur here:
- You can demonstrate as above and have learnt to fly SLE kites recently? Yes = Join Lesson 3 – Water start
- You have learnt to fly SLE kites but more than 4 – 6 months ago? Yes = Join – Lesson 2 – 4 Line kite skills
- You have been taught by a mate? Yes = Join – Lesson 2 – 4 Line kite skills If your not sure then definitely call in on 0772 53 11 22 or make an enquiry so that we can run through your skill sets and suggest the best lesson for you to join.
Progressive At this stage you are in between beginner and intermediate levels so we like to call this the Progressive.
You are currently water starting and kitesurfing greater distances but not upwind and power control can be an issue.
Level 3J •Control the riding speed by edging •Consistent riding in both directions
Level 3K •Consistent riding in all directions including upwind •Ride amongst other riders and water users and respect right of way rules
Level 3L •Change of direction without stopping •Self- rescue and full pack-down in the water
•Risk assessment and awareness of the riding area •Self launch
•Make a toe side turn •Knows the theory and the safety rules for jumping. •Land a basic jump
So close but not yet – NEXT STEP is to join a more private based progression session. Yes I can do this – You are now an Intermediate kite surfer – Happy days
The Core Skills lesson is an eye opener for most people as many completely under-estimate the power that a small foil kite can generate. It is also the first part of our Beginner Kitesurfing Course.
This 3 hour land based lesson will teach you how to set up, launch and fly a foil kite using all power ranges safely and in total control.
AIM: By the end of the lesson we aim to get you completely in control of your foil kite, be able to set up launch and land and be ready to go the water on our Step 2 – SLE Kite starter lesson. This lesson will also give you the Flying skills to learn to Pilot a Kite Buggy.
Kitesurfing Lesson: Step 2 – SLE Kite Starter
Now that you have passed your Core flying skills we can teach you how to fly the bigger more powerful SLE Kitesurfing kites in preparation for board start. This 4 to 5 hour * intensive lesson shows you how to use and implement safety systems, water re launch, pack down your kite and create traction by “body dragging”.
These skills are harder than you might think but they are huge fun to learn.
AIM: By the end of the day we aim to get you to a level where you can pass your BKSA level 1 test and have the skills in order to join Step 3 and the advanced techniques of water balance and water start.
Kitesurfing Lesson: Step 3 – Water start
Today’s 4 to 5 hour * lesson is all about teaching you the more advanced skills to keep you balanced in the water, and how to get your feet into the board straps so that you can water start. If you are an excellent student you may well stand up and Kite surf a short distance, most stand up and fly over the front either way all are grinning to Cheshire cat standards!
AIM – By the end of the lesson we aim to perfect your flying skills, the techniques of water start and have passed on invaluable condition knowledge to keep you safe so that you ultimately can practise on your own.
